Indian-trained surgeon Dr Jayant Patel, the former director of surgery at the Bundaberg hospital, fled Australia after it was discovered he had been struck off and discredited in the US for botched surgery that killed a number of patients. At least 80 people are thought to have died at the hands of Queensland's "Dr Death" following evidence provided by the State Government.
